Very expensive ECU problems - Please help!!
I'm really hoping you can help save me some money! I bought a 147 about a month ago, it started displaying the 'Motor Control System Failure' light about 2 weeks ago. I limped it to a mechanic my family has used for years, I trust him completely but he's not an Alfa specialist so may not know all the tricks to save me some cash.
He's read the ECU and says that a 'Throttle Position Sensor' fault is the problem. This would seem to be consistent with the fact that the engine idles fine but sometimes when you put your foot down the engine won't rev.
He's spoken to Alfa who say that my 2002 built 147 doesn't have a throttle position sensor, the ECU itself must be faulty. Apparently a new one of those costs about £1,000 and can't be taken from another car in a scrap yard or anything like that. He's sent the ECU to a firm that repairs them on a no fix no fee basis, but if they can't repair it I think Iím looking at a grand which would be heartbreaking!
He's taken the ECU out and cleaned it to no avail, if any of you electrical gurus have a suggestion Iíll be more grateful than you could ever know.
Even if you canít help, thanks for taking the time to read about my problem!
