Idle problem

Hi all

I seem to be having a problem with my car at idle, any ideas? When first starting up, the car is very jittery and feels like immediately it wants to stall. When looking at the rev meter the car looks like it is revving itself, fluctuating between 500RPM and 1500RPM. Obviously the lower it falls, the more the engine starts to feel like it will cut out. This happens whenever the car is at idle and it is quickly fluctuating. The problem also happens when I go to pull away, the RPM remains at 1000 despite having my foot down, and then suddenly will spark into action after a few seconds. It has recently started getting more frequent and worse, although the engine never cuts out, and the pulling away problem only happens when first starting up the car. Is this a problem with a sensor or something bigger?

Appreciate the help guys!

I had a similar problem and it was a hole in the air intake pipe. So have a good check over all the hoses for any splits/holes would be my first step.
