GT checkstraps - a warning
My GT has done over 170,000 miles and when I bought it last year, the driver's side checkstrap was really noisy. I tried the dental floss "fix" but it made no difference
As the GT is simply my commuting hack, I've tried really hard not to get too precious about it, so I simply resigned myself to having a clacking door....
However, earlier this week, Matt at Motormech pointed out that the clacking had gradually demolished the checkstrap mounting plate - sure enough, a close inspection revealed that it had cracked in two or three places around the two mouting holes - the checkstrap was only held into the door by about a third of the metal it should have had! When the door was moved, I could see the mounting bolts moving backwards and forwards, as it flexed the remaining metal
So - tonight, I removed the door, hammered the bracket straight, welded the cracks, bashed the checkstrap pivot (to close up the gap and reduce the clacking) and put it all back together - rather chuffed with myself, as it was the first time I'd had the doorcard off (How-To on this forum helped a lot)
Three hours in total, half an hour of which was spent trying to work out how to get the window to go up again.... (turns out you have to have the door closed). Also saved myself a bit of cash (checkstrap price is now £38.88 + vat)
So - if you have clacking checkstraps, don't leave it, otherwise the normal half hour fix will turn into a much bigger job
