My first gremlin,

My new alfa (98 Manl 2.0 156) has been driving well and have had no problems.

Hadnít driven it in a few days then last night went and picked up a mate 10-15 min drive parked it went for a walk for say 10 mins come back and it will start and rev to about 1100 which is normal for my first few secs but then it just dropped away to zero and stopped. It was very smooth no shaking of the engine, if I was not looking at the revs I woiuld be admiring how smoothly it was running.
It flashed the Oil, battery and some other light flashed quickly.
Try again rev dwindle die
try again same
Try again while using the accelerator, can keep it reving and get to about 3000 before I let off it then dropped down to 0 again and died,
Swear again
Wait a minute try again and starts and drives like nothing was ever wrong. Drive it home leave it come back in two hours and drives perfectly,

What could of caused this?

My ideas are fuel related,

the battery seemed to get it started fine while headlights and stereo on (thatís not a good idea is it???)

It basically seemed like nothing was there to drive the engine so the revs just dwindled and died

Using my powers of logic I blame a fuel filter or possible a fuel pump,

Car is running on 95 ron,
Has full alfa service history
Is still under warranty for the next two months,
Had about 10 litres of fuel in it,

Any ideas?

Re: My first gremlin,

From what you say, it looks like a fuel filter replacement is due. Since the alfa runs fine at times, it's not the fuel pump. It was probably run on cheap fuel. Normal replacement should be at 35,000 miles, unless cheap fuel is used causing a faster accumulation of residue or rust. It is a maintenance item not covered under warranty unless the filter is defective.

Re: My first gremlin,

It hadn't run for a few days?? Somehow my feelings are that it's not fuel filter, the fact that it has suddenly appeared and equally suddenly disappeared makes me suspect the electrogremlins. What was the weather like that evening?
Hope you don't get a recurrence anyway.

Could it be the air flow meter?

Re: My first gremlin,

Might be a faulty rpm sensor....but the symtoms are that the engine dies when it reaches operating temperature and won't restart until the engine cools down again etc.

RPM sensor is also known as TDC sensor.

Re: My first gremlin,

There isn't a fuel filter on the petrol 156 ... unless you include the built-in one in the fuel pump. Diesels obviously do have a replacable filter though.

Warm starting problems are usually down to the TDC sensor. Once cooled, the car starts again.

Re: My first gremlin,

Yes its the petrol,
I was looking for info on fuel filter replacements but couldn't find any, is this because it does not have one, sorry just got conflicting answers there, so anyone have a definite answer.

Weather was nice early evening in shorts and T shirt, not hot not cold in fact dam near perfect evening weather.

I doubt cooling had anything to do with it, as I drove for a short trip so it never got much above 70, also It was stationary for about 15 mins before issue arose then was fixed 60 seconds later, so unless I just managed to hit that timing gap perfectly I doubt that is the issue could be a factor however...

And it always did start, rev to 1100 then just dwindle and die

Drove it last night no issues,

Hmmmmmmmm what to do what to do,
Think I might pop in to my local alfa dealer and ask them to have a think about it hopefully for free,

Thanks for your help all,
any further suggestions appreicated.

Such an easy mistake to make, ie. that the dealer is likely to be helpful and for free. I would try ringing a local specialist first, they would be more likely to help you out over the phone, or have a look at the car for a more reasonable sum.

Re: My first gremlin,

Well going to see my mechanic mate, he is italian do you reckon that will help???

anyway just wondering has anyone experienced this before?

I am not sure wether I should be concerned or not as everything has returned to normal (dam I love this car) so it could just of been a lump of crap in the fuel tank or something.
