Older 156s can suffer from variator rattle, cam belt failure (already mentioned), suspension bushes (rear trailing arms and front wishbonse - top AND bottom), rust around the two bits of chassis that hang down either side of the leading edge of each front wheelarch and hold the front bumper and the wheelarch liners, radiator corrosion. My wife's is a 1999 1.8 and has about 80,000 on it now. Other than the cam belt stripping its teeth at 57,000, it has been very reliable and is still on its original battery and tailbox!
