Alfa Romeo 156

Selespeed dramas..... what part next?

Hello AO people!
I have been very busy with work for the past few months.... hence my lack of posting.....
Anyhow... things were going great.... I got a company car - 2006 Toyota Camry (new model) and the Alfa 156 can stay at home in the garage.....

Driving the Alfa has dropped to my wife's weekly 2km drive to playgroup and my weekend 15km drive on a Saturday morning.

Things were great - Camry for hard work - Alfa for fun - and I have the pleasure of knowing the Alfa is safely in the garage.

We own an Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed - year 2000 coverleaf monza model. Currently the car has 76,000 km on the clock.

The Selespeed warning light came on in September 2006 - turned out to be a wiring loom. Needed refitting - $324-50 from Alfa Romeo of Brisbane.

Over the x-mas break I washed the car, conditioned the leather.....

Took the car out for a drive just before new year and IKES....

The Selespeed warning light starts flashing just as I am driving around the block. I desperately try and get the car home without stopping - stopping causes the gears to go into neutral and hence - TOW TRUCK is required to go anywhere. I could not make it home! Well almost home.... about 5 m down the hill from my place!

Alfa goes into Alfa Romeo of Brisbane via the RACQ tow truck.....
The young service guys joke.... not another selespeed.... what goes wrong with these......

They push my lovely 156 next to a row of other failed 156s......

Alfa ring me a few days later (very politely and nice) to say the pump is stuffed..... oh well.... this could not be too much????

$1480- fitted! oh my god..... $1480 for a pump......

The actuator appears ok.... that is $4500- if it fails..... I ask the question.... when is the actuator going to fail????

They have no idea...... but they advise that I should start saving for it!!!!

At the end of the day - I LOVE THE CAR! the car is like having a mistress who is also on crack cocaine....

I even love the selespeed.... GOD only knows what the Ferrari people pay when there SELESPEED F1 system also fails!!!! I suspect prices are the same except with an extra 0 on all prices!

I love changing gears in the selespeed whilst on a roundabout! Great system when it is working......

My wife feels a bit disappointed with the car..... she feels let down.....

I think this just might be the cost of ownership..... about $2000- a year for repairs.... and if 1 year it is less than $2000- you can be sure the following year will certainly use that reserve !!!!!

The Selespeed pump is about £200 plus around an hour to fit, so I'm not sure where their extra £400 is going.
Fit a new pump relay at the same time (cost = not much!)

Suggest you try and find a specialist Alfa workshop as the dealer will be more expensive.

I to have a 156 2003 JTS Selespeed mistress. Your wife will never understand your relationship. On a serious note, Ive had a few probs with my car to, but its so much fun just to sit in let alone drive.
You will pay what your mistress demands and say nothing......

Don't worry its an ALFA.
