Main Key Not Working PLEASE Help

I went out to my Alfa 156 (2000, 2L twin spark) today and tried to unlock it. Strangely it made the sound and flashed the indicator lights as it usually would when I locked it. None of the doors opened. I tried this a few times and unlocked the door with the physical key but, of course, the code didn't go in so the engine wouldn't start. Oh and the alarm went off as soon as I opened the door. Tried to use the key fob to lock the doors again (which I had manually opened) and the lights flashed but the door stayed open so I manually locked it.

My first port of call would be the dealership but I remember reading on here that they can't do anything with they keys unless the car is there. Also, as I posted on here a week or so ago, my spare key doesn't work.

I have tried changing the battery with a new one with no effect (everything is the same as with the old battery).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Main Key Not Working PLEASE Help

Sounds like possibly an alarm issue - the alarm and the remote locking are controlled by the unit under the nearside wheel arch, if I remember correctly - at least when I couldn't disable the alarm after getting a new key, I unplugged the unit - two plugs - and neither the alarm or the remote locking now work....Car starts fine, though - that's controlled by a code box under the dash, which receives its signal from the key via an aerial wire round the ignition barrel, then signals the ECU to run.

Hmmmm.....Is the red warning light on in the speedo - looks like an injector? If so that points to the immobiliser as well, but I can't see why you should get both issues. When you say the car wouldn't start - does it spin over at normal speed? Just wondering if a low battery could be the problem...the 156s are a bit sensitive to low voltage. Failing that try all connections to the relays mounted around the battery....

That's all I can think of at present, sorry....

Re: Main Key Not Working PLEASE Help

If the code light is lit up (orange key shaped light) and the injector light (red) or engine shaped light (orange again) are lit when you turn the key to MAR, then it's an immobiliser issue causing the car not to start, could be the battery has run a bit low and the key needs reprogramming into the ecu. main dealer or specialist I'm afraid.

The lights above should go out after a couple of seconds when the key is at MAR.
