Well Happy 2004 Alfa Romeo 147 Selespeed System Error

Hi everyone!
I'm just seeking technical some advice regarding my Alfa 147. A few weeks ago, the computer started to indicate that my car has a 'Selespeed system failure', whilst beeping vigorously once every few minutes. It seems to be beeping from the dash, as well as the speedometer area as well. Since the error, I've noticed when driving in manual, the gearbox will automatically shift down to neutral from time to time, which is quite unsafe for the motor obviously. Hence, I stopped driving it, and took it in for a major service. The mechanics had a look, and said that there wasn't anything that they could do about it, as it was something Alfa Romeo had to take care of.

I'm just curious however, these error messages from computers can be very sneaky. Is this a serious error that Alfa need to sort out? Or can the error message be removed on its own? I didn't seem to have any gearbox issues until the error came up, and I believe the error message itself could be triggering the automatic shift down to neutral.

The community here is brilliant, so I trust that together we'd be able to work this out

Ps, I'm in the Adelaide area, Australia; if anyone is in the area and knows of any repairers I may need to go to, please let me know!

Thanks everyone!

Something will be triggering the error.
The message itself won't be causing the fault.

Could be something as simple as a poor connection in the large connector to the Selespeed actuator, but could be more.

Are you into a bit of simple DIY...?

When my 156 selespeed did that the cause was a failed accumulator. Once the accumulator fails the system can't hold correct pressure and it drops into neutral every so often and you get lots of beeps.

Regardless, you need to get it on to diagnostics so the error message/s that will be stored in the computer can be read and various other checks made. If you're not up to that yourself then you will need to get it to your local Alfa specialist who should have no trouble sorting it for you. Probably not a dealer though, they'll charge a bit much and won't be really interested in an older car.

If you are a practical person you have a chance....otherwise it's off to an Alfa specialist. As a start I'd recommend getting a diagnostic tool to check for error codes and to test the various functions of the selespeed system. Without it I don't think you have as much chance as Burke & Wills.
I bought 'Multiecuscan' and the relevant cable to connect to my laptop. With that I diagnosed and repaired my fault despite only ever having played with manual boxes previously.
