Weird bolt sizes or just me?
As I'm new to this Alfa Romeo spannering lark I seem to have carried out two jobs on my 156 over the weekend that seem to have odd sized bolts, or is it just me?
First job, replaced rear discs and pads, followed the Alfa Workshop guide for the removal of the pads and all went well, once I had persuaded the wheels off that is!
Disc removal, I needed to remove the "tapered peg" disc securing bolt thing. Tried a 10mm socket, too small, 12mm too big, that left 11mm. The 11mm fired but seemed sloppy, gave it a try and it rounded off the corners and did not even loosen off the fixing. Tried to see if an adjustable spanner might work but no good. Had a rummage around in my socket sets to see if I could find anything imperial that was close, 3/16 whit worth looked close but would not fit straight on. I was now at a do or die moment so after a little persuasion the 3/16 whit worth was in place along with a T bar. A couple of sharp taps with a hammer on the T bar and it loosened off the fixing and out it came. Upon re-assembly I applied some copper grease so hopefully next time the fixing might come out easier.
Next up, pollen filter. Again, following the guide on Alfa Workshop I went hunting for the three bolts that secure the pollen filter opening. Once again I took a selection of small sized sockets to the car. 4mm, too small, 5mm too small, 6mm went on but seemed sloppy but gave it a go and one fixing came out. Tried another fixing and the 6mm socket just spun. the first fixing must have already been loose. After looking at the one fixing that I had removed and offering it up to the 6mm socket it did seem a very slack fit. Socket rummage time again and came across a 5.5mm socket, perfect. Remove two more fixings and then realised that I had actual removed the wrong ones. Once I finally located the correct fixings the pollen filer was replaced.
For future reference I used a yellow paint pen to mark the three pollen filter bolts.
So I am pretty sure that the pollen filter bolts are 5.5mm.
But, can anyone actually confirm what is the correct size for the rear disc securing bolt?
I will see if I can get a picture of the yellow pollen filter bolts as it might well be of assistance to others. If I can get a good picture I will post it up.
