Too late now but you have to tap the two inner studs in the engine compartment and the whole shock will drop into the wheel arch. Takes a bit of wriggling but you'd then be able to manoeuvre the upper wishbone mount over the top of the shock and out.
Now that you've undone the nut holding the top plate to the damper and taken all the tension off the spring you're going to have hell of a game getting it out without removing bits of suspension. May get away with just the drivehaft and hub in one piece.
You'll need spring compressors to put it back together, the underside of the top plate has a pip, this has to be inline with the split in the lower fork where the shock and fork meet. As you've got it apart put some red rubber grease where the top rubber meets the spring, between the plate and ring and where the top doughnut rests on the plate.
You may want to consider replacing the ring and doughnut.
