BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES
From there, I reckon you'd disconnect the wire that runs up to the passenger seat (should be a connector there) and just close the circuit with the resistor by putting both ends of the resistor in the connector. This should 'fool' the ECU into thinking the seat is occupied. And would actually be a (sub-optimal) solution to a broken sensor pad. Your airbag should now always deploy, but does not provide as soft of a landing as it would normally do (calculating someone's weight etc.)
The error description 'ECU internal fault' sounds like, well, an internal fault though... :P
I myself simply tried switching the airbag off with the key - didn't make a difference.
FWIW, i also had a dealer diagnose the problem and they confirmed that it was probably the ECU.
I ordered an ECU -will keep you guys updated...
