Have you got the balljoint in the hub? It's the best way to do it (as mentioned in the Alfaworkshop guide) as you can put a jack under the hub and lift it.
The reason for this is with the car on axle stand(s) the wishbone is at an unnatural angle, if you lift the hub with the wishbone attached it flattens the bushes into their natural position. If you can imagine the angle the wishbones would be if the car was down on its wheels...that's the way to get them in.
Don't give up on the wishbones, it can appear as if the holes will never line up...but they do.
As you got the old ones off have you compared them side by side, pretty sure you'll find they're the same?
