156 starter motor woes
My starter motor is on the way out. Usually it's fine, but occasionally, especialy when cold, the motor jams with that unpleasant noise, and takes a bit of coaxing before it'll fire up. The car's done about 100k miles, so if it's the original unit, I guess I can't complain. I took it into my local garage yesterday (not an Alfa specialist, but honest and helpful) and got a phone call from them this morning.
They've pulled the motor out to have a look, and cleaned it up a bit, but yes, the motor is getting a bit "lazy" as they put it. But it works fine, did I want to leave it until after Xmas?
I said I thought that this was a problem that wasn't going to go away, but only get worse, and as long as I wasn't going to be without the car for too long, I should get it done. He said he reckoned a new s/m would be ITRO 90 quid, but that it was a pig of a job to get it right off,, as some of the suspension had to be dismantled (!) Said it would be a good 3-4 hour's labour. However, their labour rates are reasonably modest, so i could be looking at ITRO 200-250 quid all in. I'm off in a bit to collect the car; they said I might as well take it back whilst they source a s/m.
Does all that sound reasonable to you guys?
