Sandy rain causing windscreen scratches

I live very rurally and my 6-month old Alfa's windscreen is already covered in tiny scratches on the wiper arc. Exactly the same thing happened to my previous car after we moved here and I'm sure it's caused by the sandy roads and general crap flying around on the farms around here !!

What can I do to prevent this happening ?? As it is, I hardly ever use the wipers (to the point of not being able to see properly). They're new Bosch ones so I don't think they're the problem. I thought about Rain-x but it gets very mixed reviews.

Re: Sandy rain causing windscreen scratches

Yup we get half the sahara dumped about
3-4 times a year.

Never had it bugger the windscreen,
but it does destroy the wiper blades.

I carry a bottle of water and "splash it all over"
without using the wipers until I can jet wash it
all off.

Edit: Given up using rain-x on the windscreen,
doesn't last too long.
But I do use it on the roof and side windows.

Re: Sandy rain causing windscreen scratches

I think my car was originally owned near the coast in ireland as my windscreen is also covered in scratches to the laminate, it's so bad on occasion i've considered an insurance job as it has some chips I am sure will spread soon.

And you think you've got sandy conditions......

Autoglym has a windscreen polish which cleans up the windscreen very well - it doesn't remove scratches but might be worth giving it a go. It does make a huge difference to the windscreen - very clear after you've used it.

I agree with Nev. Rain-X isn't worth the hassle. Okay on side windows though. Also, if you've used Rain-X on your windscreen it's impossible to repair minor stone-damage as the stuff they use will no longer bond to the glass - that's what I've been told anyway!
