156 1.6 TS Cut out while down shifting.

I need a bit of help with my 156 1.6 TS.

This has been an intermittent recurring issue for quite some time.

Whenever I downshift, doesn't matter what gear or speed, the revs seem to drop far too quickly and sometimes it seems as though it just hits zero and the engine goes dead.

Electricity cuts to the power steering. Check engine and oil pressure red lights turn on.

Happens more so in the cold.

No other faults with the car before this.

It's been happening on and off for a few years, but I always fix it... until it happens again.

First fix: new battery.
Second: Alfa mechanics reset electrics and ECU and ran it round no problem. They also replaced the battery.

It's been about 18 months since the last fix, has really only been used once a fortnight for a bit of mountain driving.

Would an ECU reset have any affect?
Is it something to do with the throttle bodies?
Cam sensor fault?
Idle issue?

Any help would be brilliant before I go back to Alfa. University student so I can't splash the cash.

I was going to pull another car battery out and test tomorrow to see if it has any effect.

The power steering isn't electric, it is hydraulic driven by a pump on the engine.

Sounds to me like a throttle-body issue as it isn't controlling the idle.

But have you checked the battery?

Mine was doing that (the 2.0 TS not the JTD M-Jet) when the temperature sensor was broken. New sensor (18) and it started better, ticked over better, used less fuel and went faster. You need to read the codes though. If it is that then you'll have a coolant temperature improbable fault logged. But it could be loads of other things.

Well worth buying a KKL cable (less than a tenner) and downloading MultiECUScan (free).
