Niall, could be big ends, set of shells, around £30, and is actually only a couple of hours work if you have the right tools and can get under the car easily, however, from what I've heard previously replacing shells once the are knocking rarely lasts very long (possibly upto 1000miles depending on driving style)....
but it may not be big ends, has it had the belts done recently? I know there were are batch of dodgy dayco balance belts, the teeth were the wrong profile iirc, which sound very much like knocking big ends, I know of at least 2 cars were this has definitely been the problem....
take the aux belt and balance belts off, start it up and see if you can replicate the noise
