Re: Head lamp conversion
Hi - Just popped back to the forum for a read after moving from seven years of 156 ownership to an A3 DSG.
I used an H7 HID conversion in my last 156 and it was OK, but I did get a lot of people flashing me because the bright surround inside the standard 156 headlight caused a lot of beam scatter and dazzle.
I bought mine from HIDS4U and as mentioned elsewhere, the longer HID bulbs are a borderline fit in the 156 headlights, but HIDS4U told me recently that they have just got some new shorter H7 HID bulbs in especially to cure this issue.
I realise its not the same, but I have just successfully retrofitted proper HID projector headlights into my A3 and the principle is probably the same for the 156.
I aquired a couple of projector headlight assemblies and also a couple of "proper" D2S bulbs, but I didn't buy the expensive standard iugnitor or ballast units. I bought a convertor cable that plugged the proper HID D2S bulb directly into my aftermarket ballast units.
As mentioned above, you can't retrofit the autolevelling and the levelling motor in the projector headlights is different, so I had to remove the auto-levelling motors out of the projector headlights and retrofit my old 3-stage levelling motors out of my old halogen units. I also had to change the motor wiring inside the headlight, as the 3-stage motor had a different plug to the other levelling motor...
The net result now though is absolutely great.
Real pukka projector headlights with the perfect HID flat projector beam - and the 3-stage manual levelling still works OK.
No, I haven't got auto levelling and no I haven't got headlight washers, but I manually adjust them myself and clean them whenever they get dirty, so I don't see the absence of either of those things as being a real issue - just a technicality....
