In my 1998 156 I think the 'auto' system on the air con is very poor.
If it's cold and you have it set to say 18'c in the car, until the engine warms up it won't put full available heat into the cabin. You can make it do this though by putting the heat selector all the way to hot and switching auto off.
If left on Auto, (18'c still, unchanged from cold start) when it decides the engine is warm enough it hits you with full fan speed and maximum heat - which bloody roasts you alive until it decides you're cooked, then it winds it down.
If put on max demist from a cold start, it puts the fan on very slow speed when the weather's cold - you can demist it lots quicker by putting it to screen and speed 4 on the fan.
In all honesty, when it's cold outside the Cinquecento heater is far more user friendly!
Make something idiot proof and someone will only go and build a better idiot...
