Car will not rev beyond 4000

Hi all.

Having had my 156 (98 2.0) for 5 happy years it has suddenly developed a problem. Starting from cold it will not rev beyond 2000rpm(whilst driving or stationary). Onced warmed up it will get to about 4000rpm but no more. The car starts well and idles smoothly. I had a local garage have a look at it. They connected it to a diagnostic machine which came up with error code p0180 - fuel temperature sensor a circuit malfunction. Unfortunately they could not tell me what this meant or what to do with it!!! Would it be a case of replacing the sensor? If so does anyone know where it is located???

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

fuel temperature sensor...? I don't think there is one.

There is an air temperature sensor though, it is part of the MAF sensor in the air intake.

The error codes were obtained from the diagnostic device used by the garage and indicated fuel temp sensor!?? If the air temperature sensor was faulty do think it could be the cause of the problem with my car? Anything else I should consider?

Re: Car will not rev beyond 4000

The temp sensor is part of the maf, maf goes down the car doesn't know what it is being fed, cant inject appropriate fuel (possibly where the fuel temp comes from - fuelling system temp??) The only place fuel temp is relevant is on a rocket!!

Reckon on a knackered MAF. Your car is running on limp settings - allows any more revs it is risking knock - plus it will be running very rich..... the only other thing i have experienced that can do that you DO NOT want - a cambelt having jumped a tooth!!!

Could be water temp sensor...but your symptoms suggest AFM, as already mentioned.
