Thanks everyone for the useful tips. Grease lightning the weekend i think! I tried to take the doorcard of last weekend and removed all the screws at the bottom of the door and the one behind the handle and door release handle (alan key) but the door card still didnt want to budge. Does it lift up and out?
Aha! I know this one now!
Four screws at the bottom. Three at the bottom of the card, one in the puddle light.
Allen keys screws on the internal handle at top and bottom - use something pointy to pry out the cover over the screw at the top, pop the window control out for the other one.
Last thing to do is to pop off the little cover behind the handle that opens the door, stick something into the hole that it reveals, and pop off the whole plastic moulding around the handle.
Once everything is off, start at the bottom and pop out all the plastic retainers (carefully) then push the whole thing upwards to get the window seals loose at the top.
Rear doors have a screw hidden behind the ashtray, instead of the one on the puddle light (because rear doors don't have puddle lights.)
Once you're in there's a white weather cover that needs to be carefully removed, and will need to be stuck back on again afterwards. If you're just lubing it shouldn't need to come right off though.
edit: reappraisal of it to include removing the plastic moulding, in light of difficulties - and sudden moment of clarity - experienced while replacing door cards on mine.
Incidentally, when you put it all back together, make sure you've got all the relevant wiring in the right places, and replace the puddle light bulb BEFORE you screw the door card back down... guess who didn't do either...
