I always look for an AA traction rating. Apparently they tyres are tested in the wet for this on european standard equipment which measures grip. Most tyres will be traction A which is not as good.
Pirelli P6000 are rated A whilst Pirelli P6 and P7 are AA for instance.
Falken FK-452 are AA as are Toyo proxes T1-R.
There is also a treadwear rating. The higher the number the longer they should last. This is based on a standard test method also and is set so that a 150 rated tyre will last half as long as a 300 rated tyre. Some of the best tyres combine good treadwear with AA traction ratings, these are the tyres to buy. Ask the seller before you buy.
I would be more inclined to take notice of these than the speed rating, as long as the tyres are rated highly enough for the car.
