Re: Definitive GT tailgate rattle fix from ALFA

O dear, sounds like it wasn't touched Mike.

To be honest, the job on the sheet 427 posted up would take some time to complete (if done properly and carefully).

Is there any signs of an attempt at a fix in and around the bootlid?

Re: Definitive GT tailgate rattle fix from ALFA

Bombarded the rear of my GT with WD40 "Silicon" spray this weekend. Didn't hold out much hope that it'd work, but left it overnight to dry, and the drive to work and back today was completely quiet.

Strikes me there's a lot of plastic in the boot area where other manufacturers would use rubber or even carpet-covered material. Alfa cuts corners with build quality in the boot area IMO

Give some silcone a go, Mike, in all the areas where there's any movement between materials. Might help

Re: Definitive GT tailgate rattle fix from ALFA

I did some further tests tonight - took the parcel shelf out and no difference. I stood behind the car and started tapping the top of the hatch and it rattled straight away. It was worse on the right side than the left. So the actual tailgate is not settling flush when shut and therefore bounching as it goes over the uneven roads. Alfa are clueless at times !

So it's off backin and this time i'll hold the mechanics hand and show him what the problem is caused by. I'm certain my rattle has nothing to do with the documented fix on this thread and more to do with catch and tailgate allignment :-(

I did mention this before, but did you try removing one or both of the spring-loaded bump stops either side of the catch? These can get noisy.

427SCR, I see your tailgate saga has made it into this months AROC magazine with pics and all.

I'm sure the butcher who carried out the work is cringing in a corner somewhere.

Re: Definitive GT tailgate rattle fix from ALFA

my noise is like a rattling not a squeeking... I have my GT booked in later this month at Lombarda for them to give it a shot. I called alfa UK about it is it is just out of warranty and they are very kindly sending me 150 of vouchers to use toward the work. Hopefully Lombarda will be able to sort it - at least they acknowledge that there is a problem with the tailgate unlike other garages and Alfa UK!

Re: Definitive GT tailgate rattle fix from ALFA

After lurching around my car, while wife driving, I found out my rattle comes from somewhere between the front seats. Maybe the "gear shift is lose" (or something, a mechanic friend used these words in the same sentence).

Going to garage along with 1. MCSF false alarm, 2. wind noise from window, 3. "weeeeee-o-weeeeee"-sound from back wheels when turning, 4. some lose plastic. 1 year old car... Moments I hate Alfa, but at least it may be true that the boot rattle is solved in the 2007!

Re: Definitive GT tailgate rattle fix from ALFA

Hi all.. My turn for a gripe!

I picked up my 07 plate Blackline last Friday (25th July). Discovered a rattle from the rear on the Saturday
Seems there are still plenty of rattles even in newer cars..

427scr - Permission to PM you?
I would like a copy of your (holy grail) worksheet please. Trying not to jump to conclusions - Although it's hard not to assume the worst. (My initial response to the noise "Oh god, my GT's got the notorious 'boot rattle'")

Anything I can check in order to rule out possible causes of the problem?

Thanks

Not much help but 3 trips to the dealers got our rattle fixed under warranty.

In their defence, they didn't have the part on the 2nd trip. (I can't remember what part it was sorry)
I'm fairly certain most main dealers know what the problem is as there have been so many cars with the rattle, whether they give out that info is another matter

I've owned 3 GTs and you think I should know better! The first 2 had the rear hatch rattle - the latest one [09] appeared not to rattle at first but is now doing it at slower speeds on most roads. It is not as noticeable when making good progress. What has changed? I'd hoped the later cars had benefitted from earlier experiences.
Has anyone got any wisdom to impart - that doesn't involve dismantling the bl**** thing.

09 GT boot rattle

Any chance I could get a copy of the work document emailed to me too from anybody ? ?

I have an 09 GT, with a low speed rattle light tapping and creaking round corners.. its driving me nuts!! I took the whole boot lid apart panels etc, packed it with bubble wrap no help, sprayed silicone spray on hinge and seals no help, thought it might have been the upper brake light took that off still no help..
my car is due its first service so hoping they will look at it then.

Enclosed is a scan of the definitive fix for the rattling tailgate. The document was found screwed up on the floor of my car when I went to inspect the repair today.

the scan is only 100k, I can email or fax this document at a higher resolution worldwide. If you want it, please PM me.

Best regards.
Hello,

Can you send me that document? I have a GT and i'm crazy with that noise...

Tnks.

Interesting to see this thread resurrected. If you go to the AROC GT Register website, you'll find the document can be downloaded from the problems page. Alternatively, click here:

Alfa GT 1.9 JTDm

I've noticed quite a bad rattle / squeek from the rear of my55 plate GT since I picked it up a few weeks ago.

Yesterday, I figured out it was because the boot latch had worked itself loose from the boot lid.

With the help of a mate, we took off the plastic panel on the boot lid and tightened the latch with a socket and hey presto - rattle / squeek completely gone

The boot even makes a nice, satisfying "clunk" sound when I open and close it now. I'll post up a pic later when I get home.

Now, to try and fix the creaking clutch!

Both bolts in the picture were very loose causing a very annoying rattle and squeek.

The fix for mine was some grease in the stoppers on the boot lid.
They rattle internally, the grease stops the rattle. Bought my car brand new, started within weeks, the dealer just got some silicone grease i believe and removed the stoppers they just screw out, then filled them up with the grease and put them back. Done. It needs to be done every few months.
