The door won't go anywhere with the check strap removed, providing you're not trying to do it on a stupidly windy day.
I've also read about some members snapping the studs when doing up the bolts, have to say I suffered no such problem, just did them up to what I thought was tight enough.
Door card is easy enough, have a look at the 'how to' thread at the top of the board and follow the door card removal process in the bodywork post for replacing the door handle. As you're only doing the check strap you may be able to get away with leaving the popper on the top, rear edge of the door in place.
Once all the screws are removed and the poppers on the sides removed, swing the bottom of the card away from the door just far enough to give you room to remove the speaker, might help if you have an assistant. Replace the check strap through the speaker hole in the membrane.
