Temperature readings

Hiya all,

The temperature gauge on the 147 seems to be fulctuating a lot between 90 C and 70 C I know the gague is meant to move somewaht but have never seen it go down that far for such lenghty periods of time either?? The old fella was thinking it may be the thermostat but I am not sure??

Anyone have any opinions or experiences with this??

Re: Temperature readings

It does sound like a thermostat which is stuck open. it is a very common fault with the TS engine. I have owned 4 TS engined cars and had to change the stat on all of them..
You can tell if it it stuck open by feeling the radiator pipes, if they are warm before the car reaches operating temperature the stat is stuck open.
It is quite an involving job to change a there are 7 or 8 pipes depending on version attached to it, and the clips that hold the pipes will need to be replaced with jubilee type clips.

You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.

Re: Temperature readings

The needle will swing more than in other cars as the sensor is real time, not float point average. It should move about a bit between about 85 and 90 depending on wheteher you are on a run, or in traffic. If the stat is stuffed, it won't reach 90 at all when on the move at moderate speed. The replacement is simple but fiddly. The stat and temp sender are available from dealers or motor factors for about £35 all in. The stat replacement is about 2-3 hours work. Search for thermostat change to find more info.

Re: Temperature readings

Cheers lads for that.

The kicker is that the Alfa just had a full service and TB's done on her there 3 weeks ago.
