Help Help, Hot embers

Had a strange thing happen last night. I was stuck in a traffic jam on the M62 and the traffic was slower than snail pace. It was like this for over an hour, anyway once we got moving there were hot embers coming from the exhaust, it looked like somebody had thrown a fag out the car, I pulled over on the hard shoulder and you could see carbon glowing in the back box. I drive a JTD, after a about 10 miles it stopped and there were no problems on the way back. Could this be due to excess heat whilst driving slow in the traffic? Has this happened to any other oil burners? Advice would be welcome.

Bits of the cat being thrown out the back? Hope not, new cats aren't cheap.

Re: Help, Hot embers

Sounds like burning carbon being thrown out the back. Nothing major to worry about but a sooty engine isn`t good for performance. Do you get a puff of black smoke if you accelerate hard?

You may need a bit of injector treatment to get the engine running sweetly. Too much soot can be caused by a few things so hopefuly someone will be able to be more specific for your JTD as I`m a petrol man myself

Re: Help, Hot embers

I'm hopping it is only soot. Spoke to the service manager and he thinks the same as the car is running fine, there is no noises or misfires and the fuel consumtion is fine. I have been using the BP ultimate.
