Hmmm Non-starter!

I am currently experiencing problems with my 156 T-SPARK (1999) in that at times (no particular scenario when this occurs!) but the car fails to start. I either get a whirring kinda noise or no noise at all. Eventually the car does start, this could be at the next attempt or the xth attempt.

Anybody know of any tests or definates of what this could be. Do not know if it is related but at times when the car is running idle, I can hear a clicking sort of noise coming from under the bonnet. Not a continious one but sometimes a click!

Please help!!
Thanks in advance

Re: Non-starter!

Sonds like you've got a starter motor problem. I could be something as simple as a loose connection or possibly even the battery is on the way out. How old is the battery BTW??

Re: Non-starter!

The battery is fairly new, knocking on towards a year, might actually have a look at the water level. I was thinking starter motor, as if it was the battery the car would try to attempt to start and then die, but this is not even attempting to start, just a whirring sound!!

Is there anything I can check to diagnose this or should I just get it into a garage and replace it? How much do they cost?

Thanks in advance

Re: Non-starter!

I think mine cost about 150 to 200 to have the starter motor replaced (non dealer)... although after a while all the bills begin to blur together so I might be wrong.

Re: Non-starter!

Check all 8 of the spark plugs and the HT leads, mine did that changed the plugs and leads and not had a problem since
