I admit I knew there was a chance this was coming, but I was hoping it wouldn't
My Alfa was a "trade" sale with no warranty and with the knolwedge that the Selespeed had misbehaved itself once while the car dealer had it. It was priced at least £1000 less than comparable cars on Auto Trader at the time.
Anyway, I have driven about 300 miles so far - a combination of motorway, country and town. All was fine until this evening.
I was 10 mile into a 15 mile journey and got stuck in traffic into a town. Moved very slowly in 1st & 2nd for probably 10 minutes or so. Got past the slow bit and started driving out of town in 2nd & 3rd. I then heard a lot of revving and thought a motorbike was about to whizz past ... then I looked at my rev counter ... it was pointing very much upwards and the gear display showed N
I tried pressing the steering wheel + & - buttons, tried the gear lever and pressed the city button, but nothing had any effect. I coasted/braked to a stop and continued with the gear lever until eventually (1 minute?) it selected 1st.
I drove off and the car started, selected 2nd and very shortly started revving. Again I stopped and fiddled until it re-engaged a gear. The same thing happened again and this time I switched off, waited a minute and started up again.
The same thing happened again and I stopped until I could engage a gear and set off. This time I was able to get some speed up, into 3rd & 4th and from then on everything was fine for the rest of the journey.
Before I head for the local dealership, what can I check? The selespeed fluid appears to be OK, but it's so clear that it was hard to see where the level was!
My local independent is Bianco Auto Developments (Reigate), but he didn't seem keen on the idea of diagnosing selespeed problems
I'm currently trying to console myself that I got the car for a bargain price and therefore have a bit of reserve for this kind of issue
(but I'd rather not spend it if poss!!)
