156 Startup Noise

I'm sure this problem will have been listed before but I've had a search through a number of the pages and can't find an answer!

I've had my 156 for just over a week now, it's a 1.6TS 156 with 22k miles on the clock...

When I start it up and the engine is cold it can sometimes be quite noisy, only for a couple of seconds and then it goes but it almost sounds like a diesel starting up!

Is this normal or should I be worried?

As I say if I start the engine when it is warm I get no noise what so ever and the noise soon disappears, I'm just worried that maybe it'll get worse?

Try a search for "variator", you will find a lot of info...

Re: 156 Startup Noise

Yup, sounds like variator. You should change it at 36k, so it's a little premature, but if the previous owner wasn't too careful with oil levels, it might have got knackered. It won't damage the engine, but you might be a little down on performance without really knowing it.

Re: 156 Startup Noise

If it only does it when starting for a couple of seconds you don't need to change it.

Re: 156 Startup Noise

have the same problem.Likely to be the variator. However it can be left untill you need the belts changed, as they have to come off.So the garage will charge you anyway. My belts were done recently, however the guy didnt change the variator (before i bought it).Bit daft really, obviously cuttin corners.Noise is annoying the hell out of me, abroad at the minute, so sorting it when i get home!! Have I just contridicted myself??? ha ha!! will be fine though, untill scheduled belt replacement.
