The end has come for my Engine. Scrap or rebuild?
A colleague using my car on A41 towards Telford Yesterday. Overtook lorry going hard in 3rd. Engine lunched itself and pushed conrod out of front, depositing various parts and oil on the road. Spectacular cloud of smoke.
Engine had covered 102,000 miles, mainly motorway and all long runs, so it should have had an easy life.
Estimate for replacement using factory recon engine is £3,068 which is more than I was really wanting to spend.
Have been offered from breakers a 28,000 mile engine for £1000 but don't know what the cam belt is like so I need to budget £500 to do that, which is taking me close to the cost of the Alfa factory recon unit.
So my choice is to spend this money and then run the car for another 18 months or so, hoping nothing major goes wrong again (it's a selespeed so gearbox could cost a wedge if it needs work). Or to just scrap it now and stop throwing cash at it, move on and get something newer.
Any suggestions appreciated, or sources for recon / second user engines?
