Block exemption it's called, means independent garages can do stuff like diagnostics that comply with servicing schedules etc
It's a shame though that those selling cars (particularly main dealers) put so much emphasis on vehicles having ''Full Alfa Service History''.
We all know, of course (with a few exemptions) that having a 17 year old oik who happens to have a job with a main dealer to fix your car is far less desirable than an independent expert who has worked on our cars for years.
Unfortunately the used-car industry knows that the average car buyer (who is not an enthusiast) sees that a car has been to the dealer every 12 months for a 'service' and will happily pay extra for that used car, thus the whole dealership industry perpertuates itself.
Hopefully the growth in internet sales of new cars and the block exemption rules will put paid to main dealers coining it, but that hasn't happened yet.
