Wave power loss

Hi gang,

I've mentioned the intermittent starting problem previously - the car has never let me down though, most times it starts first time, every now and then it takes 2, 3, 6, 7 turns of the key to fire up......I've resigned myself to some mystical issue twixt key - immobiliser - ecu.

What really bugged me on Sunday was as I approached Durham down a hill which had t/lights at the bottom.....I slowed down, off the throttle, braking, dipped the clutch...........lights changed well in advance and I put my foot down.............nuffink.........a low burble.....no power....nothing.......there was no traffic, but I was forced to pop the hazards and started to pull over. I tried giving it some revs (it is notably rubbish from idle unless I give it some welly) - but nothing. No hint of it stalling, cutting out etc.......then suddenly it caught revs and from then no further problems.

Anyone else had anything like that? it's a 1.6 from 2000(x).

My wife is worried and wants me to flog it but seems happy for me to get another 156 or 166. In terms of general reliability is there any feeling out there between 1.8/2.0 and the V6 that I could easily talk myself into.....and in terms of servicing is the V6 very costly (I do about 11k a year). Any particular issues with a 166?

Re: power loss

Does sound like MAF problem, try and disonnect it and see if performance improves.

V6's are a little more thirsty but nice and throaty on the ear

166's should cost the same to maintain as there 156 counterparts engine wise as they are the same. Not sure about any suspension or electrical differences... would like to know of any though as I fancy a 166 JTD as I spend a lot of time on Motorways and the 166 seems a better cruise ship

Re: power loss

I'd have guessed at the problem being MAF related too.

Re: power loss

I just had that problem with my 156. It went into limp home mode after a motor control system failure message. It sounds like a sensor issue causing the car to go into limp home mode. Good Luck.
