Re: starter spinning, not engaging
Thanks for all your help here. But I'm hoping it was a different problem.
Once I had the car where I could look at it properly, I could tell that everything was turning as it should when the starter span up.
So I did a search on this forum once more and found mention of the non-starting problem caused by starting the car, moving it and then turning it off, all in a very short space of time.
I had done that the night before I had the problem to make some room for another car.
With nothing to lose I tried the *fix* of keeping the engine turning whilst the accelerator is held to the floor. After about 40 seconds of cranking signs of life appeared and after another 20 seconds of spluttering and hissing it was able to run unaided.
Now all I have to hope is that what I mistook for the sound of just the starter spinning was in fact the sound of the whole engine turning with absolutely no life in it. Not something I am used to hearing as it usually starts 'on the button'.
Thanks once again.
