Help Speedometer broken ?

Hi all,
I recently had my clutch replaced. It was starting to wear out, guess it's pretty normal after 170.000 km.
Almost everthing is back to normal, going strong like before, except for my speedometer.
When I drove off at the dealer, the needle stayed at 0 km/h.
I returned and they told me that the speedometer didn't had any link with the clutch.
The odometer keeps adding the km's, so that's still working.
Does anyone know anything about this, because it seems very strange to me.

Re: Speedometer broken ?

I suppose that they are technically right, but the speedo on most cars are certainly connected to the gearbox, and this would have been moved to get to the clutch.
If the pickup is electrical (as I suspect) then you may just have a lose/broken wire, or a bad connection.
I can't understand the odo still working thought, as I was under the impression that they work off the same pick-up.
Of course, it could be coincidental, and the speedo is broken, but I would investigate the wiring before stripping the speedo from the dash.

Re: Speedometer broken ?

the speedo is driven off the ABS wheel sensors. And it wouldn't just kill the speedo.

Are you sure ??

The Alfas I've worked on have been driven from a doodah in the differential housing.

An electrical sensor screwed into the top of the housing that is coonected to electrics. Normally it's the plastic "drive" under the sensor which snaps and costs about 5 for the part.

Saying that, I can't understand why the Odo is working and the speedo isn't as they come from the same drive......
