Firstly sorry for digging up an old thread, but I had the rear wheels off my GT yesterday and thought that seeing as they were four years old and nearly down to the wear indicators, I'd swap them for the fronts to make sure that I ended up replacing the oldest tyres first. Anyway did this and went out in the car and I couldn't believe the noise! they were much louder and there was a kind of thrumming noise at about 30mph - a bit like a warped disc that was coming from the front. Because of what I had done I was pretty sure that it was the wheels/tyres but as to whether it was a buckled wheel or a faulty tyre I couldn't tell so I took it down to my friendly tyre retailer. First up was the offside front. I thought this one would be ok and on the balancing machine it was balanced, no lumps in the tyre and the wheel ran true so we put this one back on. Tried the nearside and the wheel was fine but the tyre was distorted with a lump/flat spot in it. I sort of expected this because it had had a puncture and been repaired and out of the two was the closest to replacement.
Wonderful! I thought and duly replaced it with a new Pzero Rosso.
How shortsighted that transpired to be! Didn't get 1/4 mile down the road to notice the noise was still there! So this was where I played my ace! I have a full size spare in the boot with a brand new tyre on it and replaced the other wheel/tyre combo. Tried it and hey presto, sounds great! well no thrumming noise, tyres are loads quieter too - in fact I can't believe how much quieter the new tyres are especially as they are exactly the same tyre.
The only downside is I now have a bit of a scabby wheel on the front...and with a replacement door handle, new rear discs and pads due this week and service and MOT later this month it just isn't going to get refurbed this side of Christmas.
