BIG BOOM!!! Friend needs help!
Just joined the forum to help a mate in peril, I apologise in advance for the very long post that follows, but i beleive in going into full detail. I'm doin this as he doesn't have the internet, whereas i'm quite good with forums and cars and have time to faff with t'internet.
he's got a 53 plate 147 1.6 t-spark.
its been sounding a little rough for a while (bit deiselly on start-up), not the usual purr you'd expect, anyway, bout 3 weeks ago it went bang and the engine died. The AA came out and said "it might be the cam belt has snapped" , SO HE THEN WENT AND TRIED TO START IT!! after turning the engine over the guy confirmed the cam belt was indeed snapped.
so he got a quote from the alfa mangoletsi garage who said it would be £2500 to fix, understandably he hunted round and found a garage that would do it for £900. Turns out all 16 valves were bent as well as a few other things trashed. after a couple of weeks he went and picked it up.
On the drive home he noticed that he'd used over half a tank of fuel in less than 10 miles!! So back to the garage it went.
They are now saying that the entire big end has gone.
Not to sure how much they are quoting for it now, but i don't think it's pennies!
He really is at his whits end with this. So i said i'd ask some knowledgable people for any help or advice.
What should he do? Is there anywhere/anyone in the northwest (we're in cheshire) who could take a look at it?. It the garage 3 days to decide it was the big end that was gone after thinking it might be a dodgy sensor somewhere.
cheers, and sorry for the longing moaning post,
