156 Selespeed problems!! Terrible garage Experience to Top it off.

Hi All,

Im the ower of a 156, year 2000, 77000 miles FAlfaSH, immaculate car, owned it 3 months now, no problems whatsoever, first alfa ever, did not know too much about Selespeed so i have to hold my hands up for not doing my homework on them first!

Started slipping out of 1st gear into Neutral when stationary in traffic etc and this is with foot on brake and after 5 seconds of being stopped and then on occasion would take 3 or 4 attempts to get it back into 1st to pull away, very frustrating to me and the cars behind me at the lights etc.

So did some reading up on here and other places and learnt very quickly how to diagnose the problem if it was a simple one, so checked and topped up selespeed oil with correct oil from alfa gagrage and then check relays etc. The noticable thing was the pump would only run for 1 or 2 seconds and die so i though it was a pump problem, so rang around the recommend specialists and as ever they are all booked up for a month in advance so took it down to LOMBARDA ALFA GARAGE in LADBROKE GROVE, LONDON, local to me. The worst decision in my Car owning years!!! Stay clear guys, stay well clear of this bunch of crooks. Bearing in mind i have done 800 miles in 2 weeks with the above problem when they get it in they tell me the gearbox has siezed up and wont do anything at all and needs a new actuator 1500 minimum and it might need a new pump as well but can't be sure until Actuator is sorted!! blimey me no way am i spilling 1500 into a car that cost me 2200. So rang a superb guy whom i am sure some of you will know already, Eddie Mann, my car is with him now and i know he will take good care of it and sort it out as best he can for as cheap as he can which is all i ever wanted from the start. LOMBARDA told me i would need to have my car towed away so i arranged for all that and this morning when i went down, suprisingly my car had come to life and was able to be driven onto the truck and not winched, no suprise to me as i had covered 800 miles with this problem. They are crooks and they tried to shaft me on this. I am not saying my car does not need a new actuator, but i know it is not as bad as they have made out at all.

I will let you all know the outcome of this, but i really do fear for other alfa owners in London and urge them to think twice before handing over there car and keys to these Crooks.

The tell me the pressure in my Selespeed system is 72 BAR and should be 55 BAR, oes this mean anything to anyone?

Also when i activate the central locking when driving or stationary with or without keys in i get a ping noise coming from the rear/boot area, any ideas what this could be?? Solenoid perhaps?

Alfa Romeo 156

Re: 156 Selespeed problems!! Terrible garage Experience to Top it off.

Hello ,
I am an Australian who has a similar car - year 2000 Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed Monza.

I have had my own selespeed scars.....
My Alfa specialist is unable to repair selespeed issues - so I had to go to the alfa dealer.....

My selespeed issue was as follows:-
Car refused to start a few times - it would eventually start.... within a few hours - battery fine..... no selespeed whirring.....

Then I was driving and the selespeed warning light came on....
The car was in 2nd gear at the time and would not change gear.....

Then I pulled over and turned the car off (in neutral).
Car would start.... but WOULD NOT GO INTO ANY GEAR!!!!

So I was stuck! .... in Neutral.....

Luckily it eventually started and I was able to get the car home - I was only 1/2 a km from home !

Tow truck collected car the next working day and took to dealer.....
I GOT THE AWFUL QUOTE OF A$4500- for an actuator! (Australian dollars)
... turned out to be the wiring loom..... they rewired the selespeed thing and it worked fine.....

My car has a actuator series 1 - the same as yours.
I believe series 1 actuator can go at any stage......

Thankfully the rewiring cost A$324-50 from the dealer......

Car is now fine.... JUST A BIT SCARED OF THE ACTUATOR!!!!

I had the actuator replaced on my 1999 Selespeed at similar cost to the above and car has been fine since.

This is the ONLY problem I've had with the car in 6 years so in reality its not been an expensive car to own for me but I would be very wary to buy a second hand one of the same age with the original actuator.
