Well they did, and I have...and my personal verdict?
I still prefer the GT!
Now I know that some will say I am just sticking up for the car I own but I went today with the aim of deciding on which Alfa I would be buying next to replace my GT in around a years time!
I ruled out the Brera straight away when I saw just how little room was in the back but I still test drove the 2.4 JTD and the 2.2 JTS Spyder. The Brera was sluggish and felt very unresponsive and there was no real driver feedback. The car was extremely well put together though and had a very solid feel to it..but it did not have the instant drivability of the 1.9 JTD GT!
The 2.2 was a joke! I dont mean to cause any offense to anyone who may own one or who is thinking of one but that weight of the car made it feel like it didn't even have an engine under the bonnet! I thought it may feel a bit like my old 2.0 TS 156 but that was much more responsive and had some urge through the gears. There was also very little noise from it...it just didn't sound Italian
My Wife drove the Spyder 3.2 Q4 and loved it...ao rather she loved the engine! She could not get enough of the sound and was blipping the throttle and giving it some boot every chance she got
She, like me, is not a soft top fan though and said she could quite easily see herself in the Brera but not the Spyder.
I also drove the 159 3.2 Q4 and I enjoyed that! It was a fast car but, again, felt very heavy. My Wife drove the 159 JTD and, after testing them all, we both agreed that would probably be our next car......that wwas until I got back in my GT...
....it felt better than all the cars we had drove! It was not as solid, it had a few squeaks and rattles and some of the trim was not of the same quality..but the car felt like it 'wanted' to be driven..it felt like an Alfa!
So, if I was going into an Alfa dealership today with the cash to buy either a Brera or a GT and I test drove them back to back...I would come home in a GT!
