Tap water is a bad idea as it contains minerals that build limescale and obstruct water flow. Use de-mineralized (distilled) water for topping. Anyway, donít put in too much water as it can freeze in the winter and shred the radiator. The best way is to use anti-freeze coolant liquid. Itís quite cheap and you should be able to get it at any petrol station.
If you had the reservoir empty, there must be a leak somewhere. If the car doesnít leave watermarks, than the coolant might disappear somewhere in the engine, in the worst case your head gasket might be leaking.
