Sloppy Gear Lever

Just wondering if I have a problem or maybe just an Alfa characteristic, when in gear (any) the lever feels rather sloppy, a bit like stiring soup, gear change is absolutely fine though, I drove a brand new Mondeo the other day (yawn) and noticed the gear lever felt very tight and precise, any comments most welcome, cheers.

Re: Sloppy Gear Lever

This is very common on 147s (possibly 156s as well) - it is the linkage that is bolted above the bellhousing. You can take it off and grease it but the bracket itself is only about £30 (retail) and most people just replace it - about £40 - £50 all in if done by a specialist (they get them cheaper).

Re: Sloppy Gear Lever

This has been the subject of other threads in the forum.

I drove a 55 plate Multijet 147 for a week before collecting my 51 plate 2lt TS. The Diesel stick was stiff (almost too much) and the TS had a lot of lateral movement when in all positions.

At first I assumed it was probably just an age/wear & tear thing, but I have since discovered that it appears to be common. I barely notice it now as it doesn't affect the gear change. Only thing is that it is sometimes a challenge to tell when it's in neutral!

Re: Sloppy Gear Lever

Hi Paul,

I have the same problem on my car. It is still under Warranty. Do you think it can be reworked by Alfa free of charge?

Nay thanks in advance for your response.

Re: Sloppy Gear Lever

Seems to be just a trait with them seem to be on new ones aswell must be the way the gearsbox linkages are made or designed but have noticed it on all of them really. Wouldn't betoo worried about it.
