sorry yet another oil query
i have searched on here and on the internet to find out what is good and bad about oil and i have been given often conflicting information.
however i have come to the following conclusions and want to know if they are right
1/.selenia is overpriced and is nowt special and fully synthetic oils drain from the top of your engine while stood cos it is so fluid?(viscous?) you get more wear with them on cold start.however once running they are better but 80% of wear occurs on starting. so avoid fully synthetic? the following copy and pasted to show how boffins contradict themselves - synthetic oils display excellent low temperature pumpability at cold start, while still resisting volatilisation at engine operating temperatures. By reducing the time it takes to pump oil to critical parts of the engine at cold start, we can significantly reduce wear, whilst the reduced propensity to volatilise lowers both oil consumption and exhaust emissions
hang on. the same "pumpability" also alows it to drain down into your sump leaving un lubed engine bits albeit for a fraction of a second but hello wear!! old mineral oils clung to your engine parts better so the thinking is a semi better for your engine.
2/castrol gtx magnatec (my first choice for years) is very poor ,thin and gets burnt easily. is overpriced and is all hype. people in the know say it is one of the worst oils on the market and say you should get it out of your car asap. sourced from various forums including subaru owners. yet many dealers use it. scary!!
3/. millers (halfords?) is one of the best oils to put in your car along with motul which is even better. never really heard of them before.
4/. slick 50 has been proved by the AA to be a con and at £12 is one very expensive way of coating your oil filter as thats where it mostly ends up. so with this way of thinking the way magnatec is sold ie its clinginess you get the same result ish?
5/. my alfa romeo service centre in hull - jordans said dont use selenia its fully synthetic use a semi. no explanation asked or given via my mrs
so what do i buy? obviously? a semi synthetic to protect my engine on start up but which brand?
so far i have seen mobil 1, millers (halfords?) shell helix plus and motul
not getting any criticism
should i just go into a shop close my eyes and buy?
i have pm'd oilman who hasnt replied as yet.
ps got to buy oil for my laguna as well. they recommend elf but my head has shattered into tiny pieces
lol on a lexus forum just read that shell helix is slightly better than cat urine and one owner noticed rattles with 5w 40 that werent there before the oil change
motul 300v is rated but has loads of varieties
one day we will alll be dead
