What an amusing day.
Nipped into a local repair shop just to get a comparison price.
Me: "Do you carry out engine work on Alfa Romeos? It's a 156 2001, 1.8L."
Reception: "Yes, sir."
Me: "Please could you quote me for replacing a variator?"
Reception: "What's a variator? Does it bolt onto the side of the engine?"
I spent the next couple of minutes trying to explain what it does. He then wandered off to have a look at the car.
Me: "Are you sure you're qualified to carry out such a job?"
Reception: "No problem, but I'll need to get a price and call you back."
Me: "When will you get back? will it be today?"
Reception: "Should think so. I'll Google up 'variator' and see how they do it on YouTube."
At this point, I laughed so much it gave me stomach pains. I wouldn't even let them repair my daughter's toy pushchair. How do these people get away with it?
Anyway the Alfa is booked into AHM for later next week. Also, spoke to my brother, who lives a few miles up the road and said my Niece booked her Peugeot for a service a couple of years ago. They come recommended.
