wiper problem

I have just bought a 2004 Alfa 156 and have discovered that moving the wiper switch on the column down one notch - nothing, down 2 notches small click from the motor but still no movement, move down 3 notches and wipers work but no self park.
I went to the scrappy and bought a replacement motor to be met with the same failure. Both motors were 6 pin. The question is this - am i looking at the column switch or have i bought another motor with the same problem because it is a common failure...?

I'd suspect the switch or the relay... since the wiper motor is not "intelligent" and will just wipe when it gets a shot of juice.

The relay might be the easiest thing to swap over to check... but my money is more on the switch.
