I have had a problem the past couple of months whenin the hot weather when the car is started it runs a bit lumpy for the first few minutes of the journey. When cold it is fine.
A week ago when slowing down the car died, loss pf power, loss of power steering etc. The injector light comes on and so does the selespeed light. I had a new actuator and pump fitted in April 2006. I can select 1, 2, N and R but can't start the engine. The engine turns over but doesn't fire! The injector light stays on and the selespeed light flashes.
After a few minutes of the battery being disconnected the car starts.
Now, I don't think this is related to the selespeed system at all. I just think the stalling upsets the selespeed computer and that is a sympton rather than the problem.
I have driven her a few more times now and have found the following:
1. The problem ALWAYS happens when the engine is hot and in the afternoons when the outside temp is higher.
2. About 10 seconds before the engine cuts out I get a blip of power loss from the engine.
3. The stall only seems to happen as I am slowing down!
So far I suspect the MAF, due to the ongoing lumpy problems when first starting and in hot weather. And also the fact that she only seems to stall in warm conditions. The fact that the stall happens I guess upsets the selespeed system and by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes resets everything.
So, would a faulty MAF cause the stall and thje subsequent failure to fire up?
I have disconnected the lead to the MAF, the injector light stays on and the car performs similar to the lumpy problems I had but alot worse, and feels like it is always about to stall when I slow down. I haven't cleaned the MAF with IPA (not the Greene King variety!) yet but probably will do that next.
Any help and the free loan of a MAF to test in the Hampshire/Berkshire border town of Tadley would be much appreciated!
I don't want to spend £125 + VAT on a MAF for nothing!
Oh and the car is a 1999 156 Selespeed.
