Seriously though, if the cam locking tool is on the cylinder that it goes on to set the cam, then I wouldn't do it as there is too much unrestrained camshaft to flex, but if it's on No 1. cylinder the camshaft is held very firmly, and much more safely than in a vice. I think you can do a lot more damage to the cam by mucking about with it in that way.
Once the cam is secured the variator comes off very easily.
I do have CNC machined cam locking tools rather than the cheap die cast ones that you can get though, so maybe that's an issue.
