ooh,an extra gear!!

The thermostat has two outlets on the side opposite the top rad hose outlet. The smaller of these is for the egr.
The coolant flows out from these into the matrix and the egr(on different circuits obviously!) then back into the block,to be pumped round again.
So the coolant flows into the top of the egr(or the right hand side of it,if you stand by the passenger side wing and look at the egr) and returns from the lower or left hand side,I think it goes to the oil cooler by the filter after that, but that may be my memory playing tricks . . . . .
I have put my preheater inline with the heater matrix inlet, with the sensor just before it.
If I had thought about it,though, the sensor part would have worked equally well in the egr pipes.
If you put the preheater part in that line,it would be heating the water going to the block not the water entering the heater,I suppose in the great scheme of things, the same objective would be achieved and may warm the engine quicker,as opposed to just the car interior, maybe? The way I look at it is that if the coolant is warmer going to the heater matrix, the engine will warm up faster anyway and I won't freeze . . . . .
Hope that makes sense . . . . . .
Anyway,thats my 2p!Hope it helps,Captain!
