Water Pump Change

I noticed on the Alfa Workshop guide for changing the cam belt and water pump on a 1.9 16V JTDM that it doesn't mention draining the cooling system before changing the water pump. So, is there some trick to avoid losing too much coolant, i.e. be quick swapping the pumps, or doesn't it matter too much because it only dribbles out with the pump removed ?.

Also, anyone had a problem using VW G12 plus (pink stuff) in an Alfa filled with the pink coolant ?

Now I don't know how different the blocks of the 8v and 16v are... I have drained the the water from the thermostat side until there is no longer water at the the themostat level (2-3l). By doing this I haven't had any problem with water when removing the pump. I've also protected the gear box with some plastics so that no water can enter into the box and/or clutch.
