To be honest, assuming its knocking at the bottom end, the cheapest - tho not necessarily the easiest - solution is to source a second-hand engine, cost anywhere from £450 to £1k or more. It won't be easy, tho - I could sell two or three 2.0 engines per week if I had them....
As David C has indicated, tho a little late for you - you need to check the levels weekly at least......the fact of passing an MOT and only doing 9K miles isn't really a reason to expect an engine to continue to function safely.....and you should NEVER use an oil light as a safe indication of when to top up oil....I know you said you didn't - I'm just posting as a warning to anyone who might think of it :-)
