I had this when the car was new - it was the earth strap loose - in the boot on my one, bolted inside by the left hand light - pull the lining back and you will see it. But your is the newer model so may be different.

SO the warning light only comes on when you brake (sometimes).

It may be the filament in the brake light bulb. Sometimes the filament comes away from the posts inside the bulb and sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. If so it will probably fail eventually. Take the bulbs out and give them a shake to see if the filament is loose.

I'm sure I read on here about someone cleaning the contacts in the holders and on the brake light bulbs themselves to fix the problem.

You could always change the bulbs while they're out, after all they're only a couple of quid.

It`s usually the bulb contact...might be worth just taking the bulb out and check if the contact is clean. Carefull when touching the bulb though cos they can blow just by contact !!

Re: Brake Light Failure Warning Light

I had this problem in a Nissan Micra, where the filament was broken but every time I would take the bulb out and put it back in, it seemed to work when I tested it, really annoyed/confused me.

I also had this problem in a saab 900, the contacts were dodgy, even when I bent them outwards towards the bulb and cleaned them it helped, but for some reason, they always remained dodgy.

Re: Brake Light Failure Warning Light

I had this on mine with the foglight, turned out that I just needed a new bulb, on inspection the one that was failing intermitently was badly made and the contacts on the bulb were deformed and whenever I went over a bump it broke the contact setting off the warning in dashboard. Warning always went away after switching car off and switching back on again.
