Front end knocking

The drivers side front end has developed a knocking noise on my 03 plate 156 2.4 JTD.

I 'assume' it's the bushes but not sure. Is this a regular / known issue, and is it bushes ??

Re: Front end knocking

If it's anything like my 147, it'll probably be your anti-roll bar drop link/track rod end.

Re: Front end knocking

if it is a hollow knocking then yes the drop link - about £15 to buy the part, fairly easy to fit

156 2.4 JTD 2002

Re: Front end knocking

I have just bought a 156 2.4 JTD diesel and it has a knocking from the front end.

The garage has replaced the anti role bars on both sides, both wishbones and ball end joints and still the knocking persits.

The tracker ends/steering rack ends are fine.

I took it to Kwik fit and Alfa and they cannot find the problem.

On a smooth surface you cannot hear it and its only apparent on a bumpy road. I believe its coming from the passenger side.

My garage have no idea what it can be but are willing to fix it if it can be identified.

It was registered in September 2002 and has done 63000 miles.

Any ideas?

Re: Front end knocking

There is 4 front wishbones. There are ones at the top of the struts too. I think it's normally the balljoint that goes on these although on my car, it was the balljoint on one side and the bush on the other

Re: Front end knocking

Similar problem I had with my 147. Changed anti-roll bar, drop links, all the usual suspects. Turned out to be rattling pads. New pads and new discs while I was at it and the problem was solved. I too went to Kwikfit to check the brackes, and they too didn't resolve the problem. My local Alfa indie did.

You could try a simple test. If you brake when it's knocking and the knocking stops then it might just be the brakes, as in my case.

Good Luck!

Re: Front end knocking

I had a knocking noise from the front end too.

I was taking my car to Ferdi's (Alfa Specialist) for a new clutch and thought I'd mention the knocking noise from the front passenger side.

Everyone on the forum was saying Anti roll bar and drop links needed replacing, so I asked if he could check them out.

It turned out that neither the drop links or anti roll bar were at fault; it was in fact the engine mounts. What had happened was that the engine mounts had perished slightly (yes, only slightly!) and caused the engine (very heavy 2.4 JTD engine!) to drop therefore causing the drive shaft to drop.

This in turn caused the drive shaft to knock against the sub frame when ever a bump or undulation in the road caused the engine to shift.

So if I was you I’d get the garage to have a look at the sub frame where the drive shaft crosses it and check for any signs of contact.

Hope this solves your problems .

Re: Front end knocking

I've also had a knocking noise which was traced back to wishbone bushes. These have been replaced and the knocking is now less but not erradicated completely
