it certainly sunds like it could be the cam belt, it could be installed wrongly, maybe stripped a couple of teeth or something.
if the work has just been carried out, then there should be some sort of warranty if this is indeed the problem.
i worked in a garage up til a couple of years ago, we had a similar failure where we fitted a belt for a customer, a week later, the belt failed. the car was examined and found to be fitted correctly, so a warranty claim was made against the manufacturer through the supplying motor factor.
the matter was settled in the customer's favour, but be warned, it can be a long process.
if something they fitted has failed, and they refuse to replace or repair it, stick to your guns and keep pressing them.
the sale of goods act states that in item must be fit for the purpose which it was originally designed for, if the item is ok, then the workmanship may be faulty.
